Charade (1963): Regina is about to divorce her husband when she finds that he has been murdered after converting every penny they owned to cash, which is also missing. She meets Cary Grant who changes his name every 15 min. or so and is interested in her husband's money, which seems to have come from a WWII payroll he stole. His partners in crime are also very interested in where the money is, as he stole it from them as well. Everyone assumes Regina MUST know where the money is. The situation becomes more tense when the searchers begin turning up dead. (learn how this film accidentally slipped into the public domain)

Happy Go Lovely (1951): David Niven plays a rich bachelor, the head of a successful greeting-card company in Scotland, essentially a kind man but respectable to the point of stodginess and extreme stuffiness. An American troupe wants to produce a musical in town (Edinburgh?) but has trouble getting backers. Niven's character meets several of the leading ladies of the show; through a misunderstanding he doesn't correct they think that he's a newspaper reporter. He falls in love with one of the women, who reciprocates; he grows more lively and friendly, to the surprise of his employees. After a series of mishaps and comic incidents comes a happy ending: a successful show and true love.

Who is David Dreier (CA-26)?
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |3 Comments | BOOKMARK
Tom Dealy has been indicted. GOP congressional officials say Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., will recommend Rep. David Dreier of California as a temporary replacement for Tom Delay. Just who is this guy?

Dreier has served as chairman of the powerful House Rules Committee since 1999. He has also served as chairman of California's Republican Congressional Delegation since 2001. Dreier was a major player in helping elect Arnold Schwarzenegger in California's 2003 recall election, and is a frequent guest on the political talk show circuit.

Throughout his early Congressional service, Dreier established a record as a strong supporter of tax cuts and of President Reagan's anti-Communist foreign policy. One of the youngest as well as the first Californian Rules Chairman in history, David Dreier plays a pivotal role in fashioning legislation promoting Republican Party positions on Social Security, child education, taxes, and national security.

David Dreier serves the eastern cities of L.A. County in the beautiful San Gabriel Valley, including: Arcadia, Bradbury, Claremont, Glendora, La Canada Flintridge, La Verne, Monrovia, San Dimas, San Marino, Sierra Madre, Walnut, La Crescenta-Montrose, Mayflower Village, and North El Monte. Heading into the eastern part of the district, one crosses the county line into San Bernardino County and the residential communities of Upland, Montclair, and Rancho Cucamonga.

Greasemonkey Script: QuickGallery
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |1 Comments | BOOKMARK
This goes beyond many of the greasemonkey goodies available on the net. QuickGallery is not a tweak, but rather a image viewer that still has the instant gratification of other GM scripts. It automatically finds and loads all linked images and allows you to scroll through all of them on on top of the still-viewable and navigable website. In addition, clicking on thumbnails no longer result in the image loading in a new page or even the same page. Instead, it instantly pops up on top of the current page. Clicking multiple images will result in a cascade of images that are easily dismissed by a simple mouseclick.

QuickGallery completely redefines the process of viewing image galleries and adds enhanced functionality to any site with linked images. This isn't just a neat trick. It's genuinely useful, and strikingly simple. And as a bonus, it works in Opera, too.

After installation, try it out by pressing your right or left arrow keys to scroll through wtg's images, and then try clicking on thumbnails at Google's image search.

Digital Image Is Good, But Picasa Is Still Tops
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
Ars Technica has some surprising things to say about Microsoft's new Digital Image 2006.
I keep on being pleasantly surprised by new software from Microsoft. It's hard to shake their reputation as a peddler of kludgey contraptions, but programs like Digital Image 2006 are anything but. The design is clean and distilled. The program's adherence to folder structures and OS-maintained metadata means it plays nicely with other applications. Unless you decide upon trial that something about Digital Image doesn't fit your work style, there's not much about it not to recommend.
Anyone who's ever used ACDSee will agree with their assesment of the software.
It's hard not to be impressed by the sheer volume of features in ACDSee, but in practical use they just get in the way of each other. Users who liken learning new programs to solving a thorny puzzle will enjoy this one, but I'd advise most others to steer clear.

I believe the technical term is "creeping featuritis"
They say Photoshop Album has "weak touch-up tools," "unclear design," and is a "memory hog."

But when all is said and done, Google's free Picasa blows the competition away.
I admire the lean simplicity of Microsoft Digital Image, but Picasa's organizational system will be of more use to me over the long term. Its labeling system was easiest for me to deal with. I never felt like I had to conform to a particular conception of how photos should be organized when using it.

Picasa is a very strong tool. Its interface stays out of your way and makes it easy to sort through large collections of images. Not bad for a free download.
I've been using Picasa since Google bought it and it really does a fantastic job. For minor photo manipulation, it rivals Photoshop. In terms of organization, it's slick, intuitive interface has no equal. Gmail and Blogger integration, along with the Hello add-on, bring it into the Flickresque world of social image organization.

More "classic" episodes of JenniShow. Long before vlogging had a name, Jenni of jennicam was doing just that. These are episodes 8 & 9 of her 45 (that I'm aware of) episode run. Research at the wayback machine (search for thesync.com) suggests that these episode are at least 8 years old.

In episode 8, 'Lingerie Slumber Party' Jenni shows you her belly-button ring and dresses her male friend in her underwear while the gang discusses breast implants and jennicam's 2-year anniversary.

In episode 9, ' Untitled,' Jenni answers viewer questions from Dupont Circle for five minutes, and then the episode abrupty ends. Despite the broken file, I decided to post the episode in the interest of spreading this material around the net. Unfortunately, I don't know of any other sites that might have the full version of this episode. If anyone knows of such a site, please comment on this post.

Some of these episodes are really only significant for their historical value. Others are genuinely interesting. I'll leave it up to you to decide which is which.

FontExplorer X sets a new standard for font management software. After several relatively sad years for all font users who were looking for a professional font manager, Linotype is pleased to fill the gap with the new FontExplorer X. Font management has never been so simple, and font sorting, font shopping and font discovery are now more fun than ever. FontExplorer X gives computer users all the font functions they could need, and lets them decide how deeply they wish to dive into various font themes.
This looks like it could be quite useful. It also looks like they could get sued by Apple.

The Battle of Midway: "The Battle of Midway," directed by John Ford, provides a relatively brief account of the Japanese attack of American ships at Midway atoll. The film is comprised mostly of authentic footage from the battle, with dramatic narration by Henry Fonda. "Behind every cloud, there may be an enemy," he intones as American fighter pilots search the sky. The rest of the film mocks Emporer Tojo of Japan and portrays him as ruthless, bombing hospitals and churches as he tries to conquer the Pacific.

Recorded in 1958 at the Beat Hotel, rue Git le Coeur, Paris, on a UHER 4400 reel-to-reel recording machine, this record documents Brion Gysin's important experiments in cut-up and recording technique.

Sez Gysin:
"I made it to show Burroughs how, possibly, to use it. William did not yet have a tape recorder.

Very soon after that, Burroughs was busy punching to death a series of cheap Japanese plastic tape recorders, to which he applied himself with such force that he could punch one of them to death inside a matter of weeks, days even."

Safety: Harm Hides at Home(197?): A mild-mannered architect becomes Safety Woman when danger lurks for children, apparently raiding ABBA's wardrobe on the way. First, a boy making hamburgers (who keeps mumbling something about a "Super Burger") starts a small fire, but Guardania is there to save the day (and yell at him.) Then, she hears another boy who finds a gun, and she is magically whisked away to save the day for him. (If he was smart enough to take the door off a refrigerator to prevent suffocation, I would think he would be safe with a gun.) I didn't catch whether the aliens wanted her to help just the kids in her neighborhood, or the world. If it was the world, that lady would be very busy.

Katrina is a symbol of all this administration does and doesn't do. Michael Brown -- or Brownie as the President so famously thanked him for doing a heck of a job - Brownie is to Katrina what Paul Bremer is to peace in Iraq; what George Tenet is to slam dunk intelligence; what Paul Wolfowitz is to parades paved with flowers in Baghdad; what Dick Cheney is to visionary energy policy; what Donald Rumsfeld is to basic war planning; what Tom Delay is to ethics; and what George Bush is to “Mission Accomplished” and "Wanted Dead or Alive." The bottom line is simple: The "we'll do whatever it takes" administration doesn't have what it takes to get the job done.

This is the Katrina administration.

This speech is ultimately more positive than negative, but I just found this paragraph to be exceptional. It's worth the time to read the entire speech.

Asleep At Sea - Dance On (garage pop)

Arizona based indie pop-rock outfit Asleep in the Sea has taken the scene by storm with the beautiful three part harmonies, cute yet disturbing lyrics, and catchy sing-along choruses on display throughout their debut EP "Yay! OK? Yeah" which, in addition to their childishly amusing live show, has garnered much attention for the young group.

Zia - Cosmic Rain (ambient/trip-hop)

Fascinated with space exploration and music technology, Zia integrated these elements into its music and performances, creating new wave-styled, electronic pop. The band assembled their own instrumentation, using circuit boards as drum pads and a guitar-shaped MIDI controller.

The newest release of the Galleon software for TiVo features support for videocasting, including GlitchTV. While other video services are listed as well, GlitchTV is still the only one that features video exclusively for TiVo. Other programming will still have to go through a lengthy transcoding process. That said, the end-user transcoding is a welcome feature.
The Videocasting app allows you to subscribe to videocasts and videoblogs. The app provides a list of directories of OPML and RSS feeds of video content. The app will automatically download the video files of subscribed feeds and will remove old files that have been played when new files become available.

It's very exciting to see a new, enhanced avenue for GlitchTV distribution. Galleon is remaking TiVo in its own image, and its exciting to see GlitchTV in the screenshots. Of course, videocasting is just part of the enhanced functionality of Galleon. Galleon Learn about GlitchTV Subscribe to GlitchTV

Before Mama Mia, Moving Out...There Was Sgt. Pepper's
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
The latest trend on Broadway is weaving a random assortment of a single artist's music and a barely recognizable plot into a product that can only be described as lowbrow or just plain dumb. What few people realize is that this style of "art" was pioneered by the 1978 film, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Of course, it's important to note that those associated with the movie seemed to understand how stupid the project was, while Broadway sees it as legitimate theater.

The movie is a trainwreck, but you cannot turn away. With performances by The Bee Gees, Steve Martin, Earth Wind & Fire, Aerosmith, Peter Frampton, George Burns, Alice Cooper and Billy Preston among appearances by many, many others, you remain glued to the set wondering who else will show up. The movie contains no dialogue and the musical performances range from excellent (Aerosmith) to novel (Bee Gees) to absurd (Martin, Burns). If you thought the Beatles were fine exept for the lack of disco and robot voices on their albums, you'll be happy to see those shortcomings remedied here.
Unleashed on the world in July of 1978 -- a month after "Grease" had opened and cleaned up at the box office -- "Sgt. Pepper" crashed and burned almost immediately. Despite the tagline that promised "a splendid time is guaranteed for all," even the millions of Bee Gees fans who might have been persuaded to boogie into this bizarre little experiment stayed home. The two-disc soundtrack, which was panned mercilessly by critics, sold a couple million copies, but millions more copies could be found languishing in cut-out bins in the years that followed.
I found a vinyl copy on the sidewalk, complete with the poster inside, while walking the dog last night.

Circuit Bending Bush
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |3 Comments | BOOKMARK
Circuit bending is the creative short-circuiting of electronic devices such as guitar effects, children's toys and synthesizers to create new musical instruments and sound generators.
One might argue that Bush's circuits are already bent, but TechDweeb has decided to break open a George Bush doll and tinker around inside. They've thoroughly documented the project in text and photograhs and have provided mp3 snippits of the tweaks "which made him sound even more like a drunkard."

So take that audio cable, jack it into W's ass, and tune into a host of bizarre sounds.
"Project Status: Similar to the "real" George, Emperor George II is currently not functioning in the proper sense of the word."

Ana Voog recently "phoned in" a remote performance piece to the TekniKunst media arts festival. This is essentially the complete show.

sez ana:
will people treat this as a film? a performance?
something ambient in the room to talk over?
i am flat projected upon a wall i have never even touched...
but i touch it with my body from the past...through pictures of light.

it's all so surreal.
i'm somehow the focus (perhaps) of some party of which i am not really even present.
but i'm trying so hard to imagine.

will it be mostly women there or mostly men or a mix of both?
will i be shamed for the one day i cut myself in all my life?
will people laugh that my nipples point in funny directions?
will anyone solve the puzzle?
will anyone care to and really laugh at how funny it is?
will they watch me sleep after or go to dinner?

U.S. agency blocks photos of New Orleans dead
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |1 Comments | BOOKMARK
The U.S. government agency leading the rescue efforts after Hurricane Katrina said on Tuesday it does not want the news media to take photographs of the dead as they are recovered from the flooded New Orleans area.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, heavily criticized for its slow response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, rejected requests from journalists to accompany rescue boats as they went out to search for storm victims.
[reuters]
This depths of this tragedy must not be hidden. The truth must not be controlled. Our government wants to hide reality rather than address it. Their are significant problems that need to be addressed and photographs like this can force change. Nobody wants to see these photographs, but they need to be seen. The press needs to do their job and the government needs to focus on relief efforts rather than censorship. It is of the utmost importance to the future of this rescue operation and the future of this country.

This photo turned my stomach. I hope it turns your stomach, too.

Update: NerdTV has launched
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
Last week WTG featured a story about Bob Cringely and NerdTV. This is a reminder that the show has launched and is available in many different formats including audio (MP3, AAC, OGG), video (MP4, full episode and clips) and text (HTML). Head on over and check out the debut episode which features Andy Hertzfeld.

I'm considering transcoding it to MPEG2 for GlitchTV viewers. Please leave a comment if you'd like to see this happen.

The Gap Between Real News and Fox News Widens
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |1 Comments | BOOKMARK
WTG is actually pretty impressed with CNN's coverage of the hurricane tragedy. Sensationalism was toned down and actual news gathering was attempted. Tough questions were asked of appropriate people. Intelligent reporters covered meaningful angles. That said, CNN still has a long way to go.

The coverage wasn't a home run, but they stepped up to the plate while Fox News stayed on the bench with its tongue firmly planted on G.W. Bush's bunghole and its bobblehead on-air staff attempting to act like a real news organization.

Delivering more than one million downloads each month, eMusic is among the top digital music services, offering a diverse catalog of 600,000 tracks from established and emerging artists in every genre from the world's top independent labels. Founded in 1998, eMusic was the first service to sell songs and albums in the popular MP3 format and the first company to launch a digital music subscription service."
eMusic respects its customers. Rather than treating them like theves ala iTunes, Napster, etc., eMusic gives you an unrestricted MP3 that is playable on any computer, operating sytem, portable device, dvd player, car stereo, etc., etc. There are no restrictions whatsoever. And being a high bit-rate VBR MP3, the sound quality is greater than that of other online stores.

eMusic stocks artists like:
They offer 3 different subscription plans:
  • eMusic Basic: $9.99 per month/40 downloads
  • eMusic Plus: $14.99 per month/65 downloads
  • eMusic Premium: $19.99 per month/90 downloads
First-time users get a free 30-day 50 free mp3 trial. And this is not some AOL-style-sign-up-and-you're-stuck-forever deal. I've tried it myself (more than once, actually). eMusic even goes so far as to have a huge banner at the top of the page showing you how many free mp3s and days you have left before your trial is over. And cancellation is very easy.

JenniShow Episode 5: Cooking with Jenni
POSTED ON | PERMALINK |0 Comments | BOOKMARK
Another "classic" episode of JenniShow. Long before vlogging had a name, Jenni of jennicam was doing just that. This is episode 5 of her 45 (that I'm aware of) episode run. Research at the wayback machine (search for thesync.com) suggests that this episode is at least 8 years old.

This is episode 5, "Cooking with Jenni". Jenni teaches viewers how to make hummus and reveals how often she "scores."

Some of these episodes are really only significant for their historical value. Others are genuinely interesting. I'll leave it up to you to decide which is which.

UPDATE: THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION REFERRED TO THE WRONG EPISODE. THIS HAS BEEN CORRECTED. THE EPISODE IS THE SAME, BUT NOW HAS THE CORRECT DESCRIPTION.

White Zombie (1932): It is altogether typical of Bela Lugosi's lousy business judgement that he accepted one of his finest film roles for a mere $500 dollars. In the haunting low-budgeter White Zombie, Lugosi stars as Murder Legendre, a shadowy character who exercises supernatural powers over the natives in his Haitian domain. Coveting beautiful Madge Bellamy as his bride, wealthy Robert Frazier is refused her hand in marriage. He enters into an unholy agreement with Lugosi, whereby Madge will fall ill and die, then be resurrected as a zombie-and, implicitly, Frazier's love-slave. This is accomplished, but Lugosi, relishing the hold he has over Frazier, refuses to release Madge's soul. She is ultimately rescued from Living Death by her faithful beau Robert Harron and missionary Joseph Cawthorn (heretofore merely the comedy relief). Few talkie horror films have ever so expertly captured the "feel" of the silent cinema as White Zombie; the film's ethereal, ghostlike ambience enables the audiences to accept even the most ludicrous of plot twists. The producers, Victor and Edward Halperin, use the film's tiny budget to their advantage, evocatively suggesting the horrors that they haven't the financial wherewithal to show on screen. Lugosi is superb throughout, making the most of such seemingly innocuous lines as "Well, well, we understand one another better, now." Long ignored or shunted aside as insignificant, White Zombie can hold its own with any of the like-vintage Universal horror classics. (AMG)

This 1998 interview with Genesis P-Orridge contains a lot of information that has been communicated countless times before. But, as usual, new tidbits are revealed and futher pieces of the puzzle falls into place. The interview is brief, but contains one the more concise explanations of what Throbbing Gristle and Industrial music were really all about. The statement is easy to make in hindsight, but that doesn't make it any less true.
"Burroughs used to say that writing is fifty years behind painting, and I always used to say that music is fifty years behind writing. So, perhaps what we did more than anything else with Throbbing Gristle was drag all the different threads into one place at one time and we updated it all and we just said, there’s been an industrial revolution, there is now technology. Playing an acoustic guitar and singing about the cottonfields is fine, but that’s not the entire human experience anymore."

Close (To The Edit)
POSTED ON 9/02/2005 | PERMALINK |1 Comments | BOOKMARK
Anne Dudley, Gary Langan, and Paul Morley were members of producer Trevor Horn's in-house studio band in the early '80s before they formed the Art of Noise, a techno-pop group whose music was an amalgam of studio gimmickry, tape splicing, and synthesized beats. The Art of Noise took material from a variety of sources: hip-hop, rock, jazz, R&B, traditional pop, found sounds, and noise all worked their way into the group's distinctly postmodern soundscapes.
It always seemed like Art of Noise was recording either pretentious electronic prog-rock or silly novelty tracks. They even had a special gift for doing both at the same time. However, they could, on occasion, assemble a track that was neither silly nor overbearing. The first, and finest, example of this practice was Close (To The Edit), from 1984's (Who's afraid of?) The Art of Noise!.

They (sure do!) like to use (paranthesis).

Close danced back and forth between way-too-happy funk and a disturbing darkness, while twisting sound snippits of cars starting, "la la la's" and a menacing "hey"--later reused in Prodigy's Firestarter--into a style of music that was strikingly futuristic and experimental while still being radio-ready. It would be another three years before another group, M/A/R/R/S, would dare to bring such a bold experiment (Pump Up The Volume) to commercial radio.

The video for Close was delightful and disturbing as well.
If "Rockit" raised the bar for the art of music videos, MTV's Experimental Video for 1985, Art of Noise's "Close (To the Edit)," set a new standard both conceptually and stylistically. The clip, directed by Polish avant-garde filmmaker Zbigniew Rybczynski, features long, single-edit shots of a little punk girl guiding three men in laying waste to musical instruments, such as demolishing a piano with a buzzsaw, a chainsaw and a power drill. Much of the footage is sped up and jittery, and the visuals are stark and industrial.

This creepy vibe lives on in clips such as Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" and Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People." The Prodigy have said that their video for "Firestarter" was influenced by "Close (To the Edit)," and Faith No More might have raised a glass to Rybczynski when they detonated a piano at the end of their video for "Epic."

Sadly, Art of Noise would seldom reach such heights again. The only notable moments come from their most recent--and final?--album, The Seduction of Claude Debussy which, while not lacking in AoN-brand pretension, manages to justify it under the guise of the album as a virtual museum of sorts.
